Sooryavanshi, starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, has been waiting to release for over a year now. The Rohit Shetty directorial is the third film in his cop universe. After much delay, the makers announced a few days ago, that their film will finally hit the theatres on April 30.
However, given the rising number of COVID cases in Maharashtra, which comprises major market for Hindi movies, we hear the film is now being pushed back further and is unlikely to release on April 30 in theatres. A source said, “With the suspension of night shows due to night curfews in cities like Mumbai and an atmosphere of uncertainty, it’s a huge risk for a big budget film to release in theatres at this point. Given people’s safety concerns, the film is unlikely to release on April 30.” According to industry insiders, the makers are contemplating on a couple of options. The film can either opt for a direct OTT release, simultaneous theatrical & OTT release or OTT release in 14 days after theatrical release.” However, Rohit Shetty has never been in favour of OTT release, so the film seems to be stuck in a major dilemma.
The makers are yet to confirm the news and issue an official statement. Bombay Times has reached out for a comment from Reliance Entertainment, whose two big films — 83 and Sooryavanshi are waiting to release in theatres after a delay of over an year. While Sooryavanshi was to release on April 30, 83 is slated to release on June 4. 83 team has denied their film’s OTT release, when rumours of the same emerged a few days ago. Amitabh Bachchan starrer Chehre which was to release on April 9 in theatres, has also been pushed indefinitely due to the Covid situation.
