Shiv Pandit is basking in the glory of MX Player‘s ‘Chakravyuh‘ but he has his long arduous journey before reaching here. The call from Kailash and Aarti Surendranath‘s office that led him to take this plum offer, however, wasn’t an easy decision for this man to take either. “They weren’t certain if I would do the role in question because Prateik Babbar plays the main cop and frankly, I too took my time to mull over. I went on to do it no doubt but as an experiment. But now, I am so glad that I did it. I had a great time and I learnt so much about Bitcoins and hacking, which has made me really cautious in life now,” he smiles.
Rewind: Our guest on #HowIMadeIt this week, Shiv, made his first splash sometime in 2003-2004 when he did a commercial which had Nitesh Tiwari as Creative Director, Amit Sharma as Director and Binod Pradhan as DOP. None of the three need any introduction but Nitesh and Amit weren’t known names then. “However, their skill was so stark and doing that ad was tantamount to tasting blood. My mom had enrolled me in acting workshops when I was just 9-years-old and who knew that I would start chasing films.”
However, in the interim, Shiv went on to do a TV showed called ‘FIR’ which according to him threw a spanner in the first film that he was supposed to do. “After all the auditions and workshops on that film, just on the day I was supposed to sign the contract- someone apparently told the maker that I had done a TV show.” The maker got ticked off and told Shiv that he was overexposed on TV. “He also said that I should have informed him beforehand,” Shiv reveals. The very next thing that happened was that Shiv kissed goodbye to ‘FIR’. “We used to get stamped as film actors and TV actors in those days, not anymore now though. I wanted to erase that stamp which was stuck on me because of ‘FIR’,” Shiv explains.
Next, Shiv went on to host an IPL season (2008), which he says made people sit up that a ‘paan chabata’ Hanuman Prasad character from TV could speak English fluently. The perception about this man changed in the industry and soon he found himself doing Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Shaitaan’. But again, Shiv started getting roles which were similar to the one he’d done in ‘Shaitaan’. The next hurdle was to cut through the stereotype work that had started coming along.
MX Player’s ‘Chakravyuh’ came as a breath of fresh air for Shiv. On date, Shiv has three films in his kitty- ‘Shershaah’ (with Sidharth Malhotra), ‘Meet the Patels’ and ‘Zindagi Kashmakash’. “Additionally, I am doing a web series but can’t disclose its details now,” he adds, rather happily.
On the concluding note, Shiv Pandit narrates his love story which blossomed in Australia. “I knew Ameira (Punvani, costume designer) as we had worked on a film before but there wasn’t any romance between us. We happened to meet in Australia much later, and from there, things started happening and got into a different phase.”
Well, today, Shiv can certainly have at least a word or two with that filmmaker who’d showed him the door.
